Oneida
County Long Term Care Ombudsman Program
This Red
Cross advocacy program is about assuring the highest quality of care for
residents of long term care facilities. An ombudsman is a highly trained
and certified volunteer who acts as a liason between residents and staff
of nursing homes.
Ombudsman volunteers perform their work by:
•
Mediating
conflicts between residents, their families and staff to solve problems
• Investigating
complaints and making appropriate referrals
• Monitoring
facilities to insure that all state and federal laws are being followed
• Educating
residents, family members and staff about resident's rights and available
resources

Residents
have the right to:
•
Be
fully informed on issues affecting them
• Actively participate in their own
care, including transfers and discharges
• Make informed choices
• Privacy and confidentiality
• Dignity, respect, and freedom
• Have complaints and concerns dealt
with in a timely manner
Take
the training to become an Ombudsman Today!
A new training course is being offered October 29th- November 5th from
9-3:30 each day.
“Serving as an Ombudsman can be a very rewarding
and valuable experience.” said Jeff Parker, Elder Services Coordinator
. “The residents of long term care facilities frequently are unable
to speak up for themselves and don’t always have anyone available
to speak on their behalf. The Ombudsman fills this very critical role”
Anyone interested
in signing up for the training or with further questions can contact Jeff
Parker at 733-4666 ext. 205
